What we are learning this term

Spring Timetable

 English Spring Term

  •  Pupils will explore fantasy fiction. They will read the book 'Spiderwick Chronicles' and ask questions and develop an understanding of inference. Pupils will use drama to explore characters and suspense. Pupils will plan, edit and write a new episode of the fantasy story they have studied.
  • Reading comprehension will continue to be linked to the reading domains which will help to strengthen the pupils understanding an skills in approaching more challenging texts.
  • Spelling will focus on homophones and near homophones, nouns ending in the suffix -ation, adding prefixes and plural possessive apostrophes with plural words.

Maths Spring Term: Fractions and Decimals

  • Add and subtract fractions with the same denominator.

  • Fractions (including decimals)solve problems involving increasingly harder fractions to calculate quantities, and fractions to divide quantities, including non-unit fractions where the answer is a whole number.

  • Recognise and write decimal equivalents of any number of tenths or hundredths.

  • Find the effect of dividing a one- or two-digit number by 10 and 100, identifying the value of the digits in the answer as ones, tenths and hundredths.

  • Solve simple measure and money problems involving fractions and decimals to two decimal places.

  • Count up and down in hundredths; recognise that hundredths arise when dividing an object by one hundred and dividing tenths by ten.

Science - Sound

The children will find out all you can about sound; how it travels, pitch and volume. Then investigate materials to see which will provide the best insulation against sound:

  • Identify how sounds are made, associating some of them with something vibrating.
  • Recognise that vibrations from sounds travel through a medium to the ear.
  • Recognise that sounds get fainter as the distance from the sound source increases.
  • Find patterns between the pitch of a sound and features of the object that produced it.
  • Find patterns between the volume of a sound and the strength of the vibrations that produced it.
  • Ask relevant questions and using different types of scientific enquiries to answer them.
  • Set up simple practical enquiries and comparative and fair tests.

Awesome Art

With the implementation of the new art scheme the children are learning about the great artists,

architects and designers in history.  This will help them to develop, share and record their ideas in

their sketchbooks.  We will be studying the following paintings:

Earthrise, 1968 (photograph), Annunciation by Leonardo da Vinci (1452–1519) and Hugo Oehmichen (1843–1932), German Christmas Presents, 1882 (oil painting).
