Class 4 try Fronter

Class 4 are trying out a new Virtual Learning Environment called Fronter. For more information please read on :

Between now and Easter we are trialling a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) on behalf of Walsall LEA. A number of schools are working with Walsall to help select a VLE for all Walsall schools to adopt. By being in the trial we hope to be able to influence the outcome to get the best program for the school.

Virtual Learning Environments (sometimes called Learning Platforms) make the link between home and school, and provide an opportunity for children to continue the learning experience at home. Parents should note that in this short trial period, we will only be scratching the surface of what the VLE is capable of. You can find more information about VLE’s here and here.

Class 4 have been chosen to be the school representatives and are using a program called Fronter. Each child has their own log in and password, and we are encouraging the children to use the program as much as possible. We will be asking them what they like and don’t like, as well as finding out any problems they had using the program. We will then be reporting our findings to Walsall’s selection panel.

Children should remember that their actions are logged, and that it is their responsibility to keep their password secret. Abuse of the system will lead to access being withdrawn.

The Walsall trial officially ends at Easter. If Fronter is chosen as the official Walsall Learning Platform, the children will be able to continue and develop their use of the system. However, if an alternative is chosen, then our involvement with Fronter will end, and we will begin working with the new system instead.

Fronter should work on any internet-capable computer, including Windows XP and Vista, Mac OS X, and Linux. It should work with any web browser including Microsoft Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, and Opera. If you have difficulties please let us know by using the Comments section at the beginning of this post, or let Mr Mowbray know.
